Certification continues beyond the first decision
A certificate has a defined scope and status. Maintaining it involves continued conformity and the assessment arrangements agreed with the certification body. A certificate image alone does not show whether those obligations are being met.
Keep a single calendar for planned assessments, finding-response deadlines and certificate expiry. Give an accountable person responsibility for changes that must be reported to the certification body.
What surveillance examines
Surveillance evaluates the continuing operation of the management system during the cycle. The programme considers relevant processes, changes, previous findings and other applicable requirements. It should not be treated as a repeat of a prepared presentation from the initial audit.
Keep normal evidence of objectives, performance, internal audits, management review and corrective action available. Tell the auditor what has changed so the assessment can address the organisation as it operates now.
What recertification is for
Recertification evaluates the system over the cycle and provides the basis for a decision about renewed certification. Start arrangements early enough to accommodate assessment, responses and decision activities before the relevant dates.
Ask the certification body to confirm its schedule and the consequences of missed deadlines. Do not assume that an appointment booked after expiry automatically preserves uninterrupted certification.
Control changes and public claims
New sites, ownership changes, different activities and significant incidents can affect the assessment arrangements or certified scope. Report changes through the agreed route rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
When communicating certification, use the current scope and status. If a certificate is suspended, withdrawn or changes scope, update affected claims and seek the issuer's instructions about marks and references.
Your working checklist
Use this list when discussing your requirements. It helps organise questions and does not determine conformity or certification eligibility.
