Choosing and using training

Awareness, internal auditor or lead auditor training?

Choose an ISO learning level based on the work you need to perform, your experience and the assessment or recognition you actually require.

Choose the task before the course title

Start with the work the learner needs to do after training. Understanding a standard, conducting an internal audit and leading an audit team require different practice. A more advanced-sounding title is not automatically the best fit.

Write down the learner's current experience, standard knowledge and intended responsibilities. Then compare those needs with the published prerequisites, outcomes and assessment method.

Awareness and foundationThe standard's purpose, terminology and responsibilities relevant to the audience.Examples suited to the learner's role. Attendance alone does not establish audit competence.
Internal auditorPlanning, interviewing, sampling, evaluating evidence and writing findings.Practical exercises and assessment. Plan competence evaluation and any supervised practice needed after training.
Lead auditorPlanning and leading an audit team and communicating audit conclusions.Prerequisites and recognition of the exact course where needed. Professional auditor certification has separate experience and application requirements.

Awareness and foundation learning

Awareness learning introduces a standard's purpose, terminology and the responsibilities relevant to the audience. It can suit leaders, process owners or colleagues who need to understand what the management system asks of them.

Look for examples suited to the audience and a clear account of what the learner will be able to explain or recognise. Awareness attendance alone does not establish competence to conduct independent audits.

Internal auditor learning

Internal auditor training should give learners practice in planning, interviewing, sampling, evaluating evidence and writing findings. The relevant management system standard supplies the criteria, while auditing guidance supports the method.

After a course, the organisation still needs to evaluate competence and assign suitable work. Supervised practice and feedback may be needed before someone conducts an audit independently.

Lead auditor learning and professional pathways

Lead auditor learning adds the responsibilities of planning and leading a team and communicating audit conclusions. Read the prerequisites carefully; familiarity with the relevant standard may be expected before the course starts.

Passing a course and obtaining professional auditor certification are different steps. Where a registration body is involved, check its current training, experience and application requirements directly. Confirm recognition for the exact course rather than assuming it from its title.
